  • In early 2010 IHRIP and the International Budget Partnership (IBP) produced “Reading the books: Government budgets and the right to education” that looks at elements of the right to education and where these might be found in a government’s budget; a government’s human rights obligations and questions these raise about a government’s budget; a process for using a rights framework to analyze a government’s education budget; and a short discussion of costing related to the right to education.

INESC wins Bank of Brazil Foundation award PDF Print E-mail

In late 2009 INESC in Brazil won an award, given annually by the Bank of Brazil Foundation, for its program on the right to education and the government’s budget.   The organization works with students in six secondary schools on the outskirts of Brasilia, discussing with them budgets, budget analysis, human rights and citizenship.

One result of the project has been that the students identified what were to them the most important elements in the right to education, and using the results of their budget analysis, they successfully lobbied for an increase of US$1 million in the local education budget.  The Government of Brazil has shown interest in replicating this program in schools around the country.   For more information on this project, contact Iara Pietricovsky at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
